Tories maintain control of Surrey

The Conservative Party has maintained its grip on Surrey County Council, despite losing three seats.

The Tories won 56 seats, down from 59, the Residents' Association increased its number to nine and the Lib Dems gained one, taking their total to 13.

The Labour Party lost one seat and an Independent candidate won one.

There were 80 seats up for grabs on Surrey County Council. The county has been under Tory control since 1997 after four years of no overall control.

In Tandridge, Surrey County Council's Conservative leader Nick Skellett retained his Oxted seat.

Of Elmbridge's nine wards, the Conservative Party held on to five.

Those were Cobham, Hersham, Hinchley Wood Claygate and Oxshott, Walton South and Oatlands and Weybridge.

The Residents' Association kept control of three - The Dittons, Walton and West Molesey.

But East Molesey and Esher ward, which was previously held by the Tories, saw a Residents' Association councillor elected.

In Woking, the Conservatives kept three seats - Pyrford, St Johns and Brookwood, and The Byfleets - and gained a fourth - Horsell - from the Liberal Democrats.

The Liberal Democrats kept Knaphill, and gained Woking Central and Woking South from the Tories.

Turnout for Woking was 42.93%.

In Tandridge, the Conservatives also won Caterham Valley, Godstone, Lingfield and Warlingham, with the Lib Dems winning in Caterham Hill.

The Residents' Association held four seats and the Liberal Demcrats held one in Epsom and Ewell, but the Lib Dems held three seats and lost two to the Conservatives in Guildford, where the Tories also held five seats.

In Mole Valley, the Conservatives lost one seat to an Independent candidate and held three. The Liberal Democrats kept two.

But in Reigate and Banstead the Lib Dems gained one seat from the Conservatives, who held seven. The Residents' Association also held one.

Labour held a seat in Spelthorne, with the Tories keeping four and the Lib Dems gaining one and holding one.

The Conservatives kept their six seats in Surrey Heath and eight seats in Waverley, where they also gained a seat from the Liberal Democrats.
