Super Surrey

30th September 2008

Just a stone's throw from London, Surrey is extremely popular for commuters and with many famous and popular attractions, it is a favourite destination for tourists and holidaymakers.  There is no shortage of beautiful towns and villages in Surrey and it is also the most wooded county in the UK.  The Surrey Hills "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" stretches across a quarter of the county and the diverse landscape includes rolling chalk downs, ancient woodlands and flower-rich grasslands.

No matter what you are looking for, Surrey is jam packed with enticing attractions and is the perfect venue for holidaymakers, historians, adventure seekers and businessmen.  The rich heritage of Surrey cannot fail to inspire and amaze you, whether you plan to walk, cycle or drive through the beautiful countryside.  Enjoy action-packed days at one of the many theme parks or visit some of the most beautiful historic houses, gardens or museums that England has to offer.  Step back in time at the Rural Life Centre, learn about the history of the car at Mercedes Benz World, stroll around the stunning gardens of Painshill Park, Claremont Landscape Garden or Winkworth Arboretum or admire the décor and fascinating collections at Clandon Park or Polesden Lacy.

Explore the lively towns and idyllic villages or stroll along one of the many waterways that flow towards the Thames - the Basingstoke Canal or the rivers of the Mole and Wey Valleys.  Rich in wildlife and surrounded by magnificent scenery, you will find it hard to believe that London is just 40 miles away, but it is thanks to this close proximity that Surrey is one of the most affluent areas in the UK.

Guildford is the county town of Surrey, but it's administrative centre is outside the county in Kingston-upon-Thames.  The reason for this is that Kingston was originally included in the county before it became part of Greater London in 1965.  The market towns of Farnham, Haslemere, Dorking, Reigate and Godalming on the banks of the River Wey are also well worth visiting and, like Guildford, offer excellent shopping facilities, first class entertainment and a wealth of historic buildings and museums.
