Islington car park destroyed to create more allotments
29th January 2010
A car park is being torn up to create allotments in one of the north London boroughs where demand for the growing spaces is at its highest. The car park, in Holloway, Islington, has already been removed in preparation for 27 new allotments.
The old concrete surface is being crushed and will be reused to make paths through the allotments.
There is currently a waiting list of up to 25 years for an allotment in the borough of Islington.
Councillor Ruth Polling, executive member for leisure and equalities, said: "This will transform an unused, grey car park into new green spaces for our residents.
"Islington is one of London's smallest boroughs, with a limited amount of room, and this great idea breathes new life into an unused space.
"Allotments and parks are very important for our residents, and we want to make the most of every piece of land we have. "
