Days Out In Surrey

30th September 2008

There is no shortage of fun days out in Surrey!  From traditional towns to exciting theme parks and from stately homes to wildlife and river walks, it is easy to arrange a unique day out for the whole family.  Spend the day at one of Surrey's many historic houses - Hampton Court Palace, Clandon Park, Polesden Lacey, Hatchlands or Loseley Park to name but a few or take advantage of the many picturesque waterways scattered across the county.

The River Wey is Surrey's oldest waterway and it flows for 20 miles from the Thames at Weybridge through the heart of Surrey.  At one of the National Trust's most unusual properties - Dapdune Wharf - you can discover some fascinating facts about the River Wey Navigations.  The River Wey is often referred to as Surrey's best kept secret and the prettiest stretch is between Godalming at the most southerly end and Guildford which is about four miles downstream.

Surrey also has an abundance of glorious gardens and incredible vineyards.  Discover rare plants and ancient trees while walking through centuries of horticultural history. Be amazed by the fantastic follies, unique garden buildings and enjoy incredible views across the Surrey countryside.  Visit a local vineyard like Denbies Wine Estate and see how grapes are grown and turned into good English wine.  Set in 265 acres, Denbies is the largest English vineyard and the all-weather visitor centre includes wine tours, restaurants, shops and accommodation.

Add a bit of culture to your holiday by visiting one of the many galleries in the area such as  The Watts Gallery which is a memorial gallery containing pictures and sculptures by G F Watts.  Some galleries like Surrey's Open Studios even offer workshops, so your visit could be the start of a wonderful new hobby which you could try out immediately in the beautiful Surrey Hills or at one of the many historic houses.  A trip to one of the sculpture parks between Farnham and Dorking for a unique outdoor experience or visit the Guildford House Gallery - a 17th century house of architectural interest.
